Democratic report blasts for-profit colleges

WASHINGTON (AP) ? For-profit colleges put revenues above education, and charge students high tuition and loan rates that could leave them in debt for years, a Senate Democratic report said Monday.

While students are aggressively recruited, they drop out in high numbers without the degree or certificate initially sought, the report said. It found that 54 percent of students enrolled in 2008-2009 left without a degree or certificate by mid-2010. When two-year associate degree programs were studied, 63 percent left without a degree.

The staff report was issued by Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

The report said veterans were among those vulnerable to the tactics by for-profit schools, since these colleges receive the largest share of military educational benefit programs. Eight of the top 10 recipients of GI bill money since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks went to for-profit education companies.

The report said reaching an enrollment quota was found to be the highest priority for recruiters. Publicly traded companies operating these schools had an average profit margin of 19.7 percent. They paid an average of $7.3 million in 2009 to top executives, while the five highest paid leaders of large public universities averaged $1 million and leaders at nonprofit colleges averaged $3 million.

Steve Gunderson, president and chief executive officer of the Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities, dismissed the report as inaccurate.

"Unfortunately, Sen. Harkin's report continues in the tradition of ideology overriding reality," said Gunderson, a former Republican congressman from Wisconsin. "The report twists the facts to fit a narrative, proving that this is nothing more than continued political attacks on private sector colleges and universities."

He said some of the report's statistics are misleading and added, "Instead of joining the conversation about ways to expand access to postsecondary education, Sen. Harkin is attacking schools that are currently providing instruction to 3.8 million students. Today's students already face enough challenges accessing postsecondary education without these sorts of distractions."

According to the report, students at for-profit schools faced tuition for bachelor's programs that averaged 20 percent more than for similar programs at flagship public universities. Associated degree programs averaged four times the cost of similar programs at comparable community colleges, and certificate programs averaged four-and-a-half times the cost at comparable community colleges.

"Recruiting materials indicate that at some for-profit colleges, admission representatives were trained to locate and push on the pain in students' lives," the report said.

Once the students were enrolled, 96 percent needed student loans, according to Department of Education information. Fifty-seven percent of bachelor's degree students who graduated from a for-profit college owed $30,000 or more, compared to 25 percent of those earning degrees in the private, nonprofit sector and 12 percent from public colleges.

"Because many students who attend for-profit colleges are unable to get financing through private lending companies, many participate in institutional loan programs operated by for-profit education companies," the report said.

In 2009, seven large for-profit education companies offered institutional loans with interest rates ranging from 11.2 percent to 18 percent. During the same period, the Stafford federal loan rate was 5.6 percent.

In addition to the high loan rates and debt, students leaving private colleges hard a difficult time finding jobs.

The report cited a national study by an education center that found 23 percent of students who attended for-profit schools in 2008-09 were unemployed and seeking work.

Maxwell Anderson confirms: DMA would like to acquire da Vinci ...

Leonardo da Vinci's Christ as Salvator Mundi

Maxwell Anderson, director of the Dallas Museum of Art, confirmed Tuesday that the DMA would like to acquire the celebrated Leonardo da Vinci painting Christ as Salvator Mundi. The reported asking price is $200 million.

?I think it would be a significant change for the museum and the city,? Anderson told The Dallas Morning News.

Beyond that, the new director chose his words carefully.

?Our approach has been to say that the picture is here,? Anderson said. It?s housed at the DMA temporarily, pending consideration of a possible sale. It is not available for public viewing.

?It?s being actively?considered for acquisition,? Anderson said. ?But beyond that, there really isn?t much to say.?

Would it be a fiscal challenge to put the money together to acquire the painting?

?Well, I think that you could answer that question yourself,? he said with a laugh.

But it?s something you?re considering. It sounds as though you?d like to do it if possible.

?Yes.?

Have you approached your board or your donors about it?

?Of course.?

What was their reaction?

?Well, I?m going to frustrate you by stonewalling. The pledge I?ve made to everybody involved is that we really don?t have any comment because we?re considering it and all that?s implied behind that. I?m trying to be both considerate to my intrepid reporter and acknowledge the realities of how complicated something on this scale is.?

To give readers an idea of how daunting the reported price is, $200 million is the value of the embattled Museum Tower. It is FIVE times what the AT&T Performing Arts Center needs ($40 million) to finish its elongated capital campaign.

Artinfo.com reported this week that the painting was ?just reattributed to the Italian master last July.? Artinfo.com contends that the DMA is after a ?destination painting.? Art in America?s Brian Boucher reports that the price would require ?many? major donors to assemble the funds.

Artinfo.com goes on to say: ?That may prove to be an insurmountable hurdle: not everyone is convinced it is worth the fat price tag, as it is not in top condition.?

New York-based Old Masters dealer Richard Feigen told Art in America: ?For me, Dallas would make a more serious splash by going after several lesser priced paintings in very fine condition.?

Artinfo.com reports that the Salvator Mundi is owned by a group of private dealers including Alex Parish and Robert Simon. It appeared at London?s National Gallery for the exhibition, ?Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan,? which ran from November 2011 through February 2012. Simon told Bloomberg?s Scott Reyburn: ?I?ve assured the National Gallery that the painting isn?t on the market and that there are no plans to sell it after the exhibition.?

We shall see.

Blog Post ? Secretary Sebelius Commends Former Compass ...

July 30, 2012

?

Last week, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius kicked off the 19th International AIDS Conference and spoke about recent initiatives aimed at advancing HIV care and programs. More specifically, she praised the success of Community Education Group (CEG), a public health organization that works throughout the Washington, DC community to improve HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and education. CEG was a 2010 Compass client, whose team helped them create a five-year strategic plan focused on optimizing their services. Secretary Sebelius applauded CEG?s commitment to guiding patients who test positive through the treatment process by providing access to primary care and transportation. Furthermore, Secretary Sebelius explains that ?nationally, our linkage to care rate is just 77%; with CEG it?s up above 96%, which is a huge step forward.? According to James Michel, a member of CEG?s Compass team, CEG?s ability to link patients to care was a key tenet of the strategy developed by the Compass team. Congratulations to Community Education Group and the Compass team on their achievement!

Carbon-Based: No risk of flood, but forced to insure

Jeffrey Meitrodt in the Star-Tribune (Minnesota): Thousands of homeowners in Minnesota and across the country are being pressured to buy flood insurance by their mortgage lenders, despite evidence showing that many of these homes are well outside danger zones. Though the federal government's new flood maps are more accurate than ever, state and local officials say lenders and their agents are making obvious mistakes in their interpretation of flood risk.

Chisago County officials said they have intervened this year on behalf of 20 property owners who were wrongly classified as living in high-risk zones where flood insurance would be mandatory. Officials in Stearns and Washington counties also have taken steps to correct the record for dozens of homeowners who face minimal, if any, risk of flooding. "We're seeing too many problems," said Ceil Strauss, Minnesota's floodplain coordinator.

In many cases, lenders are giving homeowners just 45 days to buy flood insurance or threatening to obtain it for them, often at exorbitant prices. Some homeowners have been told their premiums could run as high as $6,400 a year.

Authorities expect the problem to get worse. Over the next two years, the Federal Emergency Management Agency will introduce new flood maps in more than two dozen counties in Minnesota, including Hennepin, the state's most populous. The maps will trigger more flood-risk reviews by mortgage lenders.

Often, lenders receive commissions for the new flood policies they impose on borrowers. Fees can amount to as much as 20 percent of the annual premium. In New York, officials are exploring whether to ban lenders from charging commissions on the forced placement of property insurance, calling such payments a "perverse incentive."....

Tips On Finding Travel Deals At Your Destination | articlereference.net

If you are planning to travel by car, purchase an expandable file to help you organize your trip. Label one slot with each day of your trip and put any information that you need for the day in there. You might include maps, directions, hotel confirmation numbers, or attraction information. Staying organized will help make your road trip less stressful and will allow you to stay on schedule.

Do not forget important medications. When a person is preparing to leave for a trip or vacation, they sometimes forget to pack the most important items, including medications. Once you get to your destination, it will be difficult to go about getting your medication, especially in countries where your insurance is not accepted.

If you are planning on going on a cruise and want to do a little shopping aboard, do your research. Different cruise ships offer different amenities. Find the boat that is right for you. There are so many things to do on a cruise boat, so find the one that will be fun for you and your companion.

If you are traveling to an area that has a liquid-restriction on all liquids you might be packing, invest in bar shampoos and tooth powder. Believe it or not, you can actually find bar shampoo and toothpaste available in powder form online. These items are a great way to get around liquid-restrictions.

When going on a cruise you should do your research. Many people settle on the first cruise that is going to their dream destination. By doing research, you can find the perfect cruise for the activities or atmosphere you are interested in, such as the ambiance, type of passengers, and swimming pools.

Be honest when taking out travel insurance. If you are ill, be sure to let your provider know about it. If your illness becomes worse during your travels the company is sure to deny your claim as a pre-existing condition. You will be left with the bill to pay on your own.

Whether you are traveling within the United States or in a foreign country, always make sure the taxi cabs you use are certified with the city. There is usually a sticker visible from the back seat of the vehicle. If you are unsure, research city-licensed cabs before you travel. This way, you can avoid unlicensed cabs that overcharge their patrons, and save money to do more fun things during your travels.

Hopefully you have now made yourself and checklist or to-do list about traveling. The advice set forth here should serve you well in the future as you travel whether it be for business or for pleasure. Taking a trip should be fun and exciting and now it can be with this information.

(AP) ? The U.S. women are atop the Olympic gymnastics standings, as expected, with little standing in their way ? except themselves.

More than the Russians, Romanians and Chinese, the biggest challenge for the gold medal may come from how they deal with world champion Jordyn Wieber's failure to qualify for the all-around final Sunday. She was bumped by her best friend on the very last routine.

"I'm definitely worried," national team coordinator Martha Karolyi said. "You try to find words ... what do you say? But the fact is the fact. She did her best. She was edged by her teammates."

A heavy favorite for gymnastics' biggest prize ? and the attention and riches that go with it ? Wieber lost her chance with a series of uncharacteristic mistakes. She wound up with the fourth-best individual score in qualifying, but countries are limited to two gymnasts in the all-around and event finals and pal Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas were ahead of her.

Russia's Viktoria Komova, who was runner-up to Wieber at last year's world championships, is ahead of all three Americans.

The 17-year-old Wieber was sobbing as she made her way through the mixed zone, so distraught she couldn't speak to reporters. Later on Twitter, she thanked fans for "all your love and support."

"I am so proud of our team today and I can't wait for team finals!!" she wrote.

It could be a historic competition for the Americans, who breezed to the top of qualifying with a score of 181.863 points and then waited to see if Russia, Romania or defending Olympic champion China could match it.

No one came close. Russia, runner-up to the U.S. at last year's world championships, was 1.4 points back (180.429) while China (176.637) and European champion Romania (176.264) were well behind.

"We knew the Americans were going to be up there," said Rebecca Tunney of Britain, which was in the same qualifying session as the Americans. "They're going to be unbeatable."

Scoring starts from scratch in Tuesday's team finals. The Americans are the strongest team top to bottom ? if they can get their heads around Wieber's woes.

After congratulating Raisman, Wieber rushed off to try to compose herself ? unsuccessfully. Her teammates were similarly shell-shocked, with Raisman looking particularly stunned.

"I was really surprised, and I feel awful because she wanted it so bad," Raisman said. "But she should still feel proud because she's an Olympian. We have to stay calm and focused on team finals."

The Americans have only one Olympic title, winning it back in 1996 with the Magnificent Seven. They arrived at the last two Olympics as world champions, only to leave without gold both times. But this team is stronger than the 2004 and even 2008 squads, and has a swagger LeBron and his buddies would appreciate.

Part of that is skill, a collection of gymnasts who do the most difficult tricks in the world yet make them look like child's play. But the Americans' have a unique bond, too, a closeness that comes from traveling the world together for events and spending weeks at the Karolyi ranch for training, little to keep themselves entertained besides each other.

Wieber, Raisman and McKayla Maroney are so close they talk or message each other every day, no matter where they are on earth.

But a shock like this can shatter even the tightest of bonds ? if they let it.

"That's what I told her. She's going to handle this with as much class as she handled the victories. Make no excuses," said John Geddert, the U.S. coach and Wieber's personal coach. "The job's not done yet. Team USA has got a big day on Tuesday."

Only four reigning world champions have won Olympic gold, with Ukraine's Lilia Podkopayeva the last in 1996. If anyone was going to avoid the 16-year curse of world champions going without Olympic gold, it was going to be Wieber. She had lost only two all-around competitions ? both to U.S. teammates ? since 2008, and the only thing more impressive than her gymnastics was her steely composure.

But Wieber appeared vulnerable these last few months while Raisman and Douglas have been on the rise. Wieber's troubles began on vault, when she stepped slightly out of bounds. Then there was a form break on uneven bars, followed by a few wobbles on balance beam. On floor exercise, she got too much power on one of her massive tumbling passes and had to steady herself with a step back ? right out of bounds. It was only a 0.10 point deduction, but it put her squarely on the all-around bubble with Raisman, the world bronze medalist on floor, still waiting her turn.

Raisman needed less than a 15 to knock Wieber down to third place, and she got it easily ? and then some. She gets such great height on her tumbling passes that you could park a Mini Cooper beneath her; and she lands them with such pinpoint accuracy you want to check her feet for glue. The crowd was grooving and moving to her "Hava Nagila" music, and she lit up the arena with her performance and smile.

As Raisman climbed off the podium, Douglas, Maroney and Kyla Ross greeted her with hugs. By then, Wieber had already disappeared, knowing her chance at the Olympic title had, too.

"I'm devastated for her," said Geddert, who has trained Wieber her entire career. "Things just didn't go her way today. It's not that she had a bad day, it's that other people stepped up and did better."

The sudden shift in fortunes put a damper on what was otherwise a spectacular day for the Americans.

"We knew the Americans were going to be up there," said Rebecca Tunney of Britain, which was in the same qualifying session as the Americans. "They're going to be unbeatable."

The Americans won the world title by four points last year ? pretty much a runaway ? and they've gotten even better, particularly on vault.

All four Americans do Amanars, one of the toughest vaults in the world ? a roundoff onto the takeoff board, back handspring onto the table and 2.5 twisting somersaults before landing. It's got a start value ? the measure of difficulty ? of 6.5, a whopping 0.7 above the vault most other gymnasts will do, and it gives the USA a massive advantage after just one event.

Even worse for their rivals, the Americans make those vaults look easy. Douglas' toes were so pointed in the air she looked like a directional arrow while Maroney's legs were ruler straight. Each American took a hop on their landing, but it was a minor deduction and the U.S. left the event with a score of 47.633.

Compare that to the Russians, who, despite Komova and Maria Paseka doing Amanars, still gave up 1.3 points on that one event.

They got some of it back on uneven bars, where Komova looked like a ballerina as she pirouetted on the upper bar. But the Americans also had the highest scores on balance beam and floor exercise ? even with Wieber, Douglas and Ross going out of bounds.

Give Raisman some credit for that. She may not have Douglas' elegance or magnetic smile, but she is steady and solid, and her routine on balance beam is a wonder to behold. She lands her skills with such assuredness she may as well be doing them in an open field rather than a 4-inch wide beam that's 4 feet in the air, and there was barely a wiggle on her dismount.

Raisman scored a 15.1 or better on all but one event, and made the finals on both floor and balance beam.

"I think that we were really strong out there today," said Raisman, the team captain. "Hopefully, we can do the same in finals."

That depends on how well Wieber can put Sunday's disappointment behind her.

"We will deal with that. We will try to help her as much as possible," Karolyi said. "I would be very disappointed, too. She is reigning world champion, also U.S. champion. Today she wasn't quite as sharp. She was very good, but not quite as sharp and the other two girls surpassed her. So we will give her all the support.

"What can you do? Sport is sport."

Turkey said Sunday it would do everything it could to prevent "terrorist" formations near its border with Syria that would threaten its national security.

"We will not allow the formation of a terrorist structuring near our border," Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told Turkish television channel Kanal 7.

"We reserve every right ... No matter if it is Al-Qaeda or PKK we would consider it a matter of national security and take every measure," said Davutoglu, without providing specifics about what measures Ankara might take.

Davutoglu's comments came after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Syria of allowing Kurdish rebels a free hand in the north of the conflict-torn country and warned that Ankara would not hesitate to strike.

Turkish newspapers have published with alarm pictures of Kurdish flags flying from buildings in northern Syria and reported that parts of the region had fallen into the hands of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), or its Syrian branch, the Democratic Union Party (PYD)

The foreign minister said some media reports wrongly suggested the entire north of Syria had fallen to the PKK.

"This is not the case," said Davutoglu. But he went on: "I cannot say there is no risk. Even if there is a one percent risk, we would take it seriously for the future of this country."

The PKK, listed as a terrorist organisation by Turkey and by much of the international community, took up arms in Kurdish-majority southeastern Turkey in 1984, sparking a conflict that has claimed some 45,000 lives.

Relations between Turkey and Syria have deteriorated since the start of the uprising against Assad's rule in Syria in March 2011, with Ankara vehemently criticising the regime's brutal crackdown against dissent.

Gunman hunted after shooting 2 cops, killing dog

By WTHR and NBCNews.com staff

State and local police backed by SWAT officers and at least one helicopter searched early Friday for a gunman who shot two officers and killed a police dog in the central Indiana town of Pendleton, authorities said.

A Madison County police spokesperson told NBC News that the suspect was considered armed and dangerous. Law enforcement officers were "actively working" on the case and local residents had been advised to remain inside, the spokesperson said.

Todd Harmeson, a spokesman for the Madison County Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency, told NBC station WTHR-Indianapolis that officers were involved in a routine call around 10:30 p.m. Thursday when multiple shots were fired, with at least two people sustaining injuries.

Two officers were taken to area hospitals from the shooting scene. An officer from the Anderson, Ind., Police Department?was taken by air ambulance to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis with a gunshot wound to the leg. That officer underwent surgery but was alert and talking, police told WTHR.

An officer from the Pendleton Police Department returned to the scene after being treated for a graze wound to the leg.?The Pendleton officer's car was also struck by bullets, WTHR reported.

The police spokesperson told NBC News that a dog working with the officers was shot and killed during the incident.

Pendleton, a town of about 4,000 residents, is situated approximately 30 miles northeast of Indianapolis.

Engadget takes a ride on the Faraday Porteur e-bike

Engadget takes Faraday Porteur ebike for a spin

We've watched as Faraday Bicycles' first offering, the Porteur electric bike, went from award-winning concept to a fully-fledged consumer product courtesy of Kickstarter. Recently, company founder Adam Vollmer offered us the chance to ride one, and naturally, we couldn't wait see it for ourselves and put feet to pedals.

First impressions are important, a fact of which the folks at Faraday are clearly aware. The Porteur's white frame, wood fenders, and sea foam green trim pieces and rims provide a pleasing visual counterpart to the leatherwork adorning the seat, frame and handlebars. Add in the yesteryear script of the logo and vermilion detailing work, and it's retro done right -- visually arresting without being gaudy. As is often the case, the coolest bits of the bike reveal themselves upon close inspection. We're fans of the leather pouch (for holding smartphones or other sundries) nestled between the parallel top tubes and chain stay guard embossed with the Faraday name. And, the addition of the company slogan claiming it's "the ultimate electric propelled utility bicycle" along with each bike's production number is a nice touch. But enough about its good looks, how the thing ride?

Romney resume from 2002 in focus amid Olympic rift

(AP) ? On a trip already marked by misstep, Mitt Romney has an Olympic history that could prove problematic: His stewardship of the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City was not without controversy.

Romney and his wife, Ann, are set to attend the opening ceremony at the Summer Games on Friday, an event that punctuates the first leg of a three-nation tour that will take him to Israel and Poland. It's the first international swing for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, who has crafted an itinerary designed to showcase his diplomatic skills and political strengths.

The Olympic appearance carries special significance for Romney. His political career was born out of his leading role at the Salt Lake City Games, which were plagued by scandal before he was tapped to take over.

"I can't resist the pull of the beginning of the Olympics here," Romney told reporters Thursday. "My experience as an Olympic organizer is that there are always a few very small things that end up not going quite right in the first day or so ? these get ironed out and then when the games themselves begin and the athletes take over, all the mistakes of the organizing committee ? and I made a few ? all of those are overwhelmed by the many things that the athletes carry out and by the spirit of the games."

Romney's comments were aimed at downplaying his earlier suggestion that British officials might not be prepared to pull off a successful Olympics. In an interview with NBC News, he called London's problems with games preparation "disconcerting," and the remark sparked sharp responses from Britain's top officials.

Prime Minister David Cameron said Romney and other doubters would "see beyond doubt that Britain can deliver." London Mayor Boris Johnson told tens of thousands gathered in Hyde Park: "There's a guy called Mitt Romney who wants to know if we are ready. Are we ready? Yes, we are!"

Amid the uproar, Romney met privately with Cameron, afterward concluding, "I expect the games to be highly successful."

The negative attention distracted from Romney's push to highlight the U.S.-British bond and bolster his foreign policy credentials as he auditions for the world's most powerful elected office. The Olympic focus also brought fresh attention to his actions in Utah a decade ago.

"The country is in need of a turnaround. The Olympics was a turnaround," Romney told CNN in an interview broadcast as London slept early Friday morning. "The attacks that come by people who are trying to knock down my business career, or my Olympic experience, or our success, those attacks are not going to be successful."

Such attacks have been plentiful in recent months. Democrats and even some Republicans have criticized Romney for taking credit for the 2002 games' success while relying on federal funding to help cover costs as the Salt Lake Olympics sought to recover from financial mismanagement and corruption.

"One of the things he talks about most is how he heroically showed up on the scene and bailed out and resolved the problems of the Salt Lake City Olympic Games," Rick Santorum, now a Romney supporter, said in February when he opposed Romney for the GOP nomination. "He heroically bailed out the Salt Lake City Olympic Games by heroically going to Congress and asking them for tens of millions of dollars to bail out the Salt Lake Games ? in an earmark."

Romney took over the games in 1999 after its leaders were accused of sending money to members of the International Olympic Committee to help Salt Lake City win the games.

By Romney's account, the government spent about $600 million helping the Salt Lake Olympic Committee. An additional $1.1 billion was planned for projects like roads and bridges, infrastructure improvement projects that the government probably would have paid for eventually, though the timing of the games may have sped up the construction.

Romney has made himself the very public face of the effort, claiming that he personally cut millions from the budget, wooed major companies and won sponsorships himself and pulled the whole endeavor back from the brink of failure. His record in Salt Lake was the cornerstone of his run for governor in Massachusetts, a campaign he announced in March 2002, just weeks after the games concluded.

Romney, who promises to slash federal spending if elected president, rarely acknowledges the federal support for the 2002 games on the campaign trail. His aides say much of it was for increased security costs after the 2001 terrorist attacks, which occurred about five months earlier.

But Romney doesn't mention the commitments the government had already made to cover costs associated with the games ? or elaborate on his role in persuading congressional appropriators and critics to give the games more money.

In the 2004 book he wrote about the games, "Turnaround," Romney outlined how he revamped the Salt Lake Olympic Committee's lobbying operations in Washington. He directed plans to hire experienced transportation lobbyists and wooed congressional leaders.

In one instance, Romney highlights how he made arrangements for different states to send experienced bus drivers to Utah. He helped arrange to pay them union wages, he wrote in the book ? and he persuaded the federal government to pick up the tab.

One of the lessons he learned: "If you work at it long enough, there is always another way to get the help you need in Washington," he wrote.

In London, first lady Michelle Obama is also scheduled to appear at Friday's opening ceremony, in addition to other events. She and Romney are expected to avoid the same venues.

Romney said he would attend at least one event in addition to the opening ceremony. The family has a horse competing in an equestrian event known as dressage. But Romney told Britain's Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg that he would prefer to watch swimming.

Why?

"That's just what's been arranged. It fits in the schedule," Romney said. "Swimming is always fun, and Americans typically do well in swimming."

Guest Post: Managing Logistics Outsourcing Relationships | Mini ...

There has been a significant rise in competition in the logistics service industry over the past decades with the logistics markets growing steadily. As competition in the emerging global economy continues to get higher, majority firms, particularly those involved in manufacturing and retailing are turning towards outsourcing logistics functions.

Most logistics firms consider outsourcing as a feasible business strategy, as they believe contracting out certain functions will help companies have full control over their resources. The major benefit of outsourcing warehousing and distribution operations is that companies will be in a better position to fully concentrate on vital issues and take steps to improve future growth of the organization.

In order to improve the overall image of the organization, it becomes increasingly important for firms to effectively manage logistics outsourcing relationships. Before proceeding on this topic, it is vital to know the meaning of logistics outsourcing.

The term outsourcing refers to a process when a firm contracts out some of its operations to a third party that works independently. Logistics firms resort to outsourcing in order to reduce costs and increase profit margins. Logistics outsourcing has gained immense importance today.

It is vital to maintain good relation between service providers and customers in order to boost logistics performance. Here are a few reasons about the importance of maintaining good relationships when outsourcing.

? Maintaining a good logistics outsourcing relationship is highly important for the success of any business. It is crucial for the competitiveness of a supply chain.

? Customer satisfaction and loyalty will only be achieved when service providers and customers maintain a good rapport.

? Service processes become mutually dependent and inhibited at times. This is one major reason for the importance of maintaining good relationship between service providers and customers in order to effectively co-ordinate service processes well.

Most of the logistics firms believe outsourcing their logistics and supply chain operations to third party logistics (3PL) will help in cost reduction and bring profitability in business. This belief holds true in the current economic scenario, where costs continue to rise. Non-core functions of organizations are being outsourced to improve competence and boost customer service.

Logistics firms try to maintain long-term relationships with 3PLs for better business. The relationship between logistics firms and 3PLs will remain good as long as the third party logistics providers meet the expectations of firms.

Once a logistics firm outsources some of its core operations to a 3PL, the third party logistics provider becomes an integral part of the business. The 3PL not only becomes an integral part of business, it also becomes an important part of customer operations. The 3PL becomes fully aware about the needs and wants of customers and manages to fulfill these needs by utilizing its own expertise. This helps relationship strengthen and grow further.

Prior to selecting firms for outsourcing, it is vital to fully understand business goals and settle on issues pertaining to company?s competence. At times the company you are outsourcing your business to, may not have good logistics functions such as warehousing and transportation. Keep this in mind before you plan to outsource certain operations to firms.

Facebook revenue growth skids, shares plunge

By Alexei Oreskovic and Gerry Shih

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc reported a drastic slowdown in revenue growth and failed to offer financial forecasts to quell fears about its ability to boost advertising growth, sending its shares plummeting to a record low.

In its inaugural earnings report since becoming the first American company to debut with a value of more than $100 billion, Facebook reported revenue increased 32 percent in the second quarter to $1.18 billion, in line with average forecasts.

But it offered no outlook for the current period as some investors had hoped.

Shares of Facebook, which has shed a third of its value since its haphazard May debut at $38, hit below $24 in frenzied after-hours trading.

Mark Zuckerberg, the 28-year-old Chief Executive who created Facebook in his Harvard dorm room, said that the company was seeing encouraging results from newly-introduced advertising services and that Facebook now has a "clear path" to building a strong mobile business.

Facebook has raced through eight years of break-neck growth that was to have culminated with its May coming-out party.

Instead, its share price has headed south as investors questioned its valuation of more than 50 times earnings, and its longer-term ability to sustain growth with users migrating to mobile devices.

Monthly active users grew to 955 million at the end of the second quarter, up from 901 million at the end of March. But mobile monthly active users surged 67 percent year-on-year to 543 million users, adding further pressure on Facebook's business, which only recently began to offer limited forms of mobile advertising.

"They beat, but the Street was looking for more and that's why I think shares turned lower after an initial bounce," said Michael Matousek, a senior trader at U.S. Global Investors Inc, which manages about $3 billion. "The big question with the stock is how it will monetize its billion or so users. A lot of people think they can't convert those users to money.

"It doesn't look good with this new information out there. I don't want to say the story is broken, but the story is kind of broken."

The company said that its capital expenditures more than tripled to $413 million in the second quarter.

A CHALLENGE ANEW

Facebook's growth rate in the second quarter was the slowest since the first three months of 2011, when it began disclosing that information.

In past years, it has steadily challenged established Web powers Google Inc and Yahoo for consumers' online time and advertising revenue. Now, as mobile devices like smartphones and tablets penetrate deeper into consumer markets, the company is struggling to drive advertising revenue off them.

"The fact that there's no guidance in the press release likely has people concerned about the achievability of people's full year expectations," said BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield.

"Growth is clearly slowing on both the user and revenue basis, and without guidance to make people believe it's growing, you have a large part of investor fear."

Facebook Finance Chief David Ebersman told Reuters in an interview mobile represented a great opportunity for Facebook in the long run.

On Wednesday, social games leader Zynga - which accounts for over a 10th of Facebook's revenue and faces the same challenge of earning off mobile users - stunned investors after slashing its 2012 earnings forecasts.

That helped wipe 9 percent off Facebook's value during regular trading on Thursday.

Zynga and Facebook were among a bevy of hot tech prospects that went public in 2011 on the back of renewed dot-com mania gripping Wall Street. They, along with fellow 2011 debutante Groupon Inc, have since gone into a tailspin.

On Thursday, Facebook posted a net loss of $157 million, or 8 cents a share, in the second quarter after taking hefty stock compensation charges related to its IPO. That compared to net income of $240 million, or 11 cents, in the year-ago quarter.

Excluding the charges, Facebook said it earned 12 cents a share, in line with Wall Street's forecast.

Revenue in the three months ended June 30 was $1.18 billion, compared to $895 million in the year-ago quarter.

Executives told analysts on a conference call that the company will keep investing to build out and enhance its mobile application, with an eye to closer integration with popular gadgets such as Apple Inc's iPad and iPhone.

Zuckerberg dashed widespread reports that it would try and design its own smartphone, saying it made little sense to dive into hardware but adding that he was constantly looking to improve the mobile experience.

Shares of Facebook are now down 37 percent from its $38 offering price. The stock dived to $23.83 in extended trade, from a close of $26.85 on the Nasdaq.

About 15.9 million shares changed hands, vaulting the stock to the top of the Nasdaq's most-active list after hours.
