Co-Founder ?Who Made Numbers God? At Zynga Joins Bee Cave ...

Zynga co-founder and godfather of metrics-based game development Eric Schiermeyer quietly slipped out of the company, is working on a new startup, and today announced he?s become an investor and advisor to Bee Cave Games, makers of play-money gambling Facebook game Blackjack Casino. Bee Cave Games CEO Erik Bethke tells me Schiermeyer?s advisor role is a weekly commitment and his investment is part of a forthcoming funding round in the low millions.

Previously, Schiermeyer was?a CTO of Myspace, and at Zynga he was VP of Product. Bee Cave Games won?t be his full-time gig as he tells me he?s advising some other companies, and is in the early stages of building a new company. ?A former Zynga employee gave me this candid look into working with Schiermeyer:

?He was known as the most aggressive man at Zynga. He ran the product management organization. They were the numbers guys, the one behind metrics. He?s the one who made numbers God in the product management cultures. That?s where he was the most aggressive, always trying to push the numbers, push the numbers.?

That strategy of tweaking every bit of a game?s design to increase growth, retention, engagement, and monetization is arguably what made Zynga so financially succesful in its early years. It may have also eventually contributed to low morale, fleeing talent, and the inability of Zynga to produce any hit games recently.

Our source says, ?His reputation was for being a bit abrasive and hard to work with, but he was absolutely successful. He got results. He was the driving force behind Zynga?s growth.?

Screenshot-MapScreen

Schiermeyer will bring serious business experience to his board advising and investment spot with the young company, which was was founded in 2012 and has only raised?$1.4 million before now. Why did he pick the startup? He tells me ?I think BCG is posed to take all the lessons they learned from pioneering the social games space into the casino world. I?ve looked at all the top grossing casino apps on IOS and they remind me of the old school online gambling downloadables. ?Certainly while I was still at Zynga we were eating traditional gaming companies lunch in the online side of the business. I think BCG could do something similar.?

Schiermeyer left Zynga in July 2011. ?Since the public offering at the end of that year, the gaming giant?s share price has rallied from its year?s low of $2.10 in November up to $2.78 now, but has been on a jagged decline since March. Zynga recently fired hundreds of employees, closed several offices, and earlier this month shuttered the Draw Something studio OMGPOP it bought for $200 million just a year prior.

The plan has been for Zynga to reemerge as a leaner, mobile-focused gaming company. But it?s not that simple. The big gaming business is based on home runs that pay for development of a slew of titles, and Zynga hasn?t been able to find one. Many hopes now rely on its plans for real-money gambling games.

Bee Cave CEO Bethke, who formerly worked with Schiermeyer at Zynga on Mafia Wars, told me factors that have led to Zynga?s fall include ?tremendous amount of talent turnover. I think they?re struggling. It needs direction, it needs a strategy. If you look over at King they?re making hits. If you look at the Facebook ecosystem everyone else is making 60% more this year than last year. Despite Zynga?s decline, Facebook?s [gaming] ecosystem is still up.?

That bodes well for Bee Cave, whose only game right now is on the Facebook platform. The company claims that Blackjack Casino is ?now the #2 fastest growing casino game on Facebook trending charts?, though AppData puts it below 50,000 daily users. Bethke tells me that later this summer it plans to port the game to iOS, Android, and 14 other languages, and it?s building some new titles. While Bee Cave games let users bet fake money,?Schiermeyer?s ruthless efficiency could help the studio churn out real dollars.

Eric is the the Guru of Growth. Prior to launching Zynga, he was the CTO at eUniverse, the company that became Intermix Media, parent company of MySpace.

Stress: It should never be ignored, experts say

June 27, 2013 ? Work pressure, tension at home, financial difficulties ? the list of causes of stress grows longer every day. There have been several studies in the past showing that stress can have negative effects on health (cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure and more). The Inserm researchers at unit 1018, "The Epidemiology and Public Health Research Centre," working in collaboration with researchers from England and Finland have demonstrated that it is essential to be vigilant about this and to take it very seriously when people say that they are stressed, particularly if they believe that stress is affecting their health. According to the study performed by these researchers, with 7268 participants, such people have twice as much risk of a heart attack, compared with others.

These results have been published in European Heart Journal.

Today, stress is recognized as one of the main health problems. When people face a situation that is considered stressful, they may experience several physical, emotional and behavioural symptoms (anxiety, difficulty in concentrating, skin problems, migraines, etc.). Previous studies, particularly the recent studies performed within the Whitehall II cohort[1], composed of several thousand British civil servants, have already shown that the physiological changes associated with stress can have an adverse effect on health.

Herman Nabi, Inserm researcher at Unit 1018 "The Epidemiology and Public Health Research Centre," and his team went further and studied people who declared themselves to be stressed, in order to look more closely at whether there was a link between their feeling and the occurrence of coronary disease some years later.

Using a questionnaire prepared for the Whitehall II cohort, the participants were invited to answer the following question: "to what extent do you consider the stress or pressure that you have experienced in your life has an effect on your health," the participants had the following answers to choose from: "not at all," "a little," "moderately," "a lot" or "extremely."

The participants were also asked about their stress level, as well as about other factors that might affect their health, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, diet and levels of physical activity. Arterial pressure, diabetes, body mass index and socio-demographic data such as marital status, age, sex, ethnicity and socio-economic status were also taken into account.

According to the results, the participants who reported, at the start of the study, that their health was "a lot" or "extremely" affected by stress had more than twice the risk (2.12 times higher) of having or dying from a heart attack, compared with those who had not indicated any effect of stress on their health.

From a clinical point of view, these results suggest that the patient's perception of the impact of stress on their health may be highly accurate, to the extent that it can predict a health event as serious and common as coronary disease.

In addition, this study also shows that this link is not affected by differences between individuals related to biological, behavioural or psychological factors. However, capacities for dealing with stress do differ massively between individuals depending on the resources available to them, such as support from close friends and family.

According to Hermann Nabi, "the main message is that complaints from patients concerning the effect of stress on their health should not be ignored in a clinical environment, because they may indicate an increased risk of developing and dying of coronary disease. Future studies of stress should include perceptions of patients concerning the effect of stress on their health."

In the future, as Hermann Nabi emphasizes, "tests will be needed to determine whether the risk of disease can be reduced by increasing the clinical attention given to patients who complain of stress having an effect on their health."

[1] Created in 1985, the Whitehall II cohort, consisting of British civil servants, is making a major contribution to research in social epidemiology and is considered internationally to be one of the main sources of scientific knowledge concerning social determinant factors for health.

(AP) ? A granddaughter of Nelson Mandela says the former South African president remains in critical condition.

The granddaughter, Ndileka Mandela, made the comment Thursday when she and other family members stepped outside the Pretoria hospital treating 94-year-old Mandela to collect flowers and messages of support that were left outside the building.

Ndileka Mandela also describes her grandfather's condition as stable, indicating it had not changed since the government said on Sunday that Mandela's health had deteriorated to a critical state.

The granddaughter says it has been a difficult situation for the family, especially because they are coping with Mandela's illness in the public eye.

Respawn Entertainment talks Xbox Live Cloud, praises its multiplayer servers

Microsoft's been quick to point out how it's beefing up the Xbox Live Cloud in preparation for its next wunderconsole, and now Respawn Entertainment is stepping in to detail just what Redmond's architecture means for multiplayer on Titanfall. The firm's Jon Shiring, who works with the game's cloud computing integration, says that the next-gen title boasts vastly improved online play since it leans on Ballmer and Company's cloud hardware instead of users to host sessions. By taking advantage of Microsoft's servers, the futuristic shooter benefits from more reliable bandwidth, snappier matchmaking times, extra CPU power and the elimination of latency-based host advantage and hacked-host cheating, to boot. Naturally, using dedicated servers can cost a ton, but Respawn says Microsoft managed to keep things comparatively inexpensive for developers, in part thanks to its Azure tech. For the dev's comprehensive write-up on just what this revamped Xbox Live architecture may mean for gaming, click the source link below.

(AP) ? The last piece of confetti had landed, the Miami Heat championship celebration was officially over and many in the crowd of revelers were starting to make their way to the exits.

Players and coaches remained on the stage.

They were in no hurry to leave. Every member of the NBA champions stood and watched a giant video board play highlights of Miami's march through the playoffs, from LeBron James' MVP-caliber plays on both ends to Ray Allen's season-saving 3-pointer in Game 6 of the NBA Finals and countless moments in between.

"It's a special group," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "You know what? This season started over nine months ago with that trip to China and we were able to experience so many cool things together in the regular season. But at times, it just seems to be going by so fast."

So maybe that's why the Heat aren't ready to stop celebrating this title just yet.

With an estimated 400,000 people lining the downtown Miami streets, the Heat held their parade and an in-arena rally afterward Monday. James stood atop a double-decker bus with a cigar in his mouth for the parade. Shane Battier blew kisses to the crowd, Dwyane Wade raised three fingers aloft and Chris Andersen flapped his arms in a nod to his "Birdman" moniker.

"It's the ultimate," James told Sun Sports, the Heat broadcast partner. "It's the ultimate. This is what I came down here, to be able to have a parade at the end of the year. I'm extremely blessed, man. It doesn't get any better than this."

Several players held super-soaker squirt guns and sprayed water on fans, confetti dotted the streets, and horns honked from all directions. Heat managing general partner Micky Arison and team president Pat Riley stood in the front of one bus, while Spoelstra ? his championship cap turned backward ? waved and clapped at fans.

"Miami parties better than any city in the world," Spoelstra said. "But it took nine months, nine months of incredible sacrifice, not only by these men right here but everybody in our organization, grinding it out every single day, ups and downs, highs and lows. And to have a culmination like Game 7 in front of all of you here is incredible."

Wade said that without the fans, Miami wouldn't have found a way to win the title.

"It's humbling. It's very humbling to be here," Wade said, gazing out at the enormous crowd. "I envision a lot of things. I can't say I envisioned this. This parade down Biscayne Boulevard was once a vision by Coach Riley and now we've taken this ride three times. It's special."

When Riley got hired by the Heat, he talked at his introductory news conference about his vision of a parade down Biscayne Boulevard. It took Riley until 2006 to deliver on that hope, but now with three parades in eight seasons, the Heat are getting used to these celebrations.

"Their names are going to be respected and honored," Riley said. "And that's all we have. All we have is the name on the front of the shirt, which is the Heat, and the name on the back of the shirt. And that's why we play."

Miami became the sixth franchise in NBA history to win consecutive championships, after topping the San Antonio Spurs in this year's finals for the third title overall for the Heat franchise, needing a Game 7 to get it done. Wade and Udonis Haslem ? a Miami native who said "this is what it's all about" ? are the only players to be part of all three titles, and Wade insisted Monday that the city is going to be his home now for good.

"This is my home. They've treated me well since Day One," Wade said. "I'll be here for probably the rest of my life in this amazing city. I thank the Miamians for accepting me as one of their own."

Miami needed to win Games 6 and 7 of the finals to capture the title, and needed a huge late comeback in Game 6 just to force the ultimate game. Down by five with less than a half-minute left in regulation, James and Ray Allen made 3-pointers ? Allen's coming with 5.2 seconds left ? to force overtime, and the Heat ultimately prevailed to get into Game 7.

"I have to say that is the biggest shot I ever hit in my career," Allen said.

Along the parade route, one vehicle carried a number of uniformed military personnel. The Heat have honored military members before every home game in Miami for the past several seasons.

Police reported no major problems, and bomb- and drug-sniffing dogs were spotted working their way through the crowd. City officials banned fans from carrying backpacks, though several were spotted along the route and some people were searched randomly for security reasons. The huge crowds and parking difficulty did not seem to take away from the fans' celebratory mood.

"It's the excitement of something that doesn't come around too often, even though we've been lucky to experience it two years in a row," said Heat fan Blake Thames, who made the trip down from Palm Beach County.

Some fans began arriving before sunrise Monday, and traffic into downtown was extremely heavy as people hoped to get close enough for a glimpse of the celebration.

"It hasn't hit me yet," James said. "This is unbelievable to be a part of such a great franchise and to be able to go back-to-back."

Players spent the weekend celebrating. Some are planning to start vacations later this week, while others will remain in South Florida for at least a few more days.

"All the fans that we're seeing here is who supported us throughout the whole season, man," James said. "This is the least we could do is ride through the city and show our appreciation."

Israeli, Palestinian finance ministers meet

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israeli and Palestinian finance ministers have agreed on a series of economic cooperation projects.

Sunday's meeting between Israel's Yair Lapid and the Palestinians' Shukri Bashara marked the first high-profile meeting between officials since the new Israeli government took office in March.

Lapid said cooperation would include joint investments and trade between the sides. He said it would benefit both and vowed to "continue to strengthen the connection and promote important economic issues that are important to both sides."

Lapid leads the centrist Yesh Atid Party. He has conditioned the party's membership in the governing coalition on a viable effort to restart peace talks with the Palestinians.

Israel and the Palestinians cooperate economically on a number of fronts. Israel, for instance, collects some tax and customs money for the Palestinians.

Ailing Kepler telescope spots 503 new potential alien planets

NASA

NASA's Kepler mission is searching for Earth-like planets by looking for them to cross the face of alien stars.

By Mike Wall
Space.com

NASA's Kepler spacecraft has spotted 503 new potential alien worlds, some of which may be capable of supporting life as we know it.

"Some of these new planet candidates are small, and some reside in the habitable zone?of their stars, but much work remains to be done to verify these results," Kepler mission manager Roger Hunter, of NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., wrote in an update on June 7.

The latest haul brings Kepler's tally of exoplanet candidates to 3,216. Just 132 of them have been confirmed by follow-up observations to date, but mission scientists expect at least 90 percent will end up being the real deal. [7 Greatest Kepler Discoveries (So Far)]

The new finds were pulled from observations Kepler made during its first three years of operation, from May 2009 to March 2012, researchers said. The telescope hasn't done any planet hunting since being hobbled by a failure in its orientation-maintaining system last month.

Uncertain future
The $600 million Kepler spacecraft?launched in March 2009, kicking off a 3.5-year mission to determine how common Earth-like planets are throughout the Milky Way galaxy.

Kepler spots exoplanets?by detecting the tiny brightness dips caused when they pass in front of their stars' faces from the instrument's perspective. The observatory does this precision work by staying locked onto 150,000-plus target stars using three gyroscope-like devices called reaction wheels.

Kepler launched with four functioning reaction wheels ? three for immediate use and one spare. But one wheel, known as No. 2, failed in July 2012. And a second (No. 4) gave up the ghost last month, robbing the spacecraft of its precision pointing ability.

If at least one of the failed wheels cannot be recovered, Kepler's planet-hunting days are almost certainly over and a new mission will have to be drawn up for the spacecraft.

Engineers have identified a number of tests that could help gauge the likelihood of bringing back the balky wheels, Hunter said. They're currently developing these commands on the Kepler testbed at Ball Aerospace in Boulder, Colo., where the spacecraft was built.

"It will likely be several weeks before they are ready to implement the commands on the reaction wheels aboard the spacecraft," Hunter wrote in the June 7 update. "We will continue to provide updates on significant changes as these plans develop and mature."

More finds to come
Whether or not Kepler can get healthy again, the mission's exoplanet finds will keep rolling in for years to come, researchers say.

Kepler has collected huge amounts of data, and team members have had time to go through just about half of it so far.

"We have excellent data for an additional two years," Kepler principal investigator Bill Borucki, also of NASA Ames, told reporters last month. "So I think the most interesting, exciting discoveries are coming in the next two years."

Concert review: Roger McGuinn at the Corona Virgin Mobile Theatre ...

MONTREAL - Seeing the avuncular, easygoing figure telling stories and playing some tunes you just might remember at the Corona Virgin Mobile Theatre Wednesday night, it was all too easy to forget for a moment how Roger McGuinn, as the leader of the Byrds, did far more than most to change the musical language of rock.

Much has been written on how far the Byrds advanced the plot in the `60s (including an essay I wrote for a series on the artists who wrote the book of rock). Accordingly, the case need not be re-argued here. In fact, let's just say there is no appeal.

So it was almost surreal to see a smiling McGuinn, alone on stage, kicking off this year's edition of the Folk Festival on the Canal by leading a polite, seated audience - mostly made up of boomer folkies and rockers - in song. "What's he the head of?," McGuinn asked during the chorus of Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man. And what could be stranger than everyone responding by sweetly singing "He's the head of the Ku Klux Klan"? Or trying, at the chief Byrd's request, to master the one and one-two claps in Old Blue, which he played on banjo? Or providing, on cue, the teenage-girl screams during the break in the acerbic So You Want to Be a Rock n' Roll Star?

It was game-changing music recast as campfire singalong.

But cheapen the oeuvre? Not a chance.

If anything, the electric, magical communal experience shared in the room, as McGuinn played both non-negotiable classics and deep-catalogue delights, was precisely the proof of how enduring and meaningful his work has been.

In spite of the fact that no one could possibly count how many times he has played Mr. Tambourine Man, the thrill of its 1965 arrival could be felt close to 50 years later in the ghostly chime of McGuinn's resigned return to it. The ringing opening chords of Turn! Turn! Turn! still make the hair on the back of your neck stand on end. The stately psychedelia of 5D (Fifth Dimension) has lost none of its beauty. And even with its acoustic flamenco makeover, Eight MIles High remains a gripping musical journey.

In a generous concert that clocked in at about 100 minutes, not including a brief intermission,, McGuinn also gave the audience opportunities to discover or rediscover less easily-remembered gems from his work, like the haunting Russian Hill, the rock n' roll sea shanty Jolly Roger, a breathtaking You Showed Me and Just a Season, a highlight of the evening that found McGuinn dropping his usual high tenor for a few lines, to great effect.

Not surprisingly, the man behind the monthly Folk Den podcast also reached way back for seasoning. Pretty Saro, St. James Infirmary Blues, Rock Island Line, Randy Dandy Oh and The Water Is Wide took their place in a set list that was virtually flawless.

The storytelling - and there was plenty of it - was icing on the cake. Diehard fans would know the story of how Bob Dylan fired the first salvo in the writing of The Ballad of Easy Rider, or the way five very different personalities came to make up the Byrds, for example, but McGuinn's gentle, self-deprecating delivery made all the tales fresh and fascinating.

Alternating between acoustic 7-string guitar, banjo, acoustic 12-string and the trusty trademark 12-string electric Rickenbacker, McGuinn missed few of the high points. To flip through those back pages with him was a rare privilege.

Oil drifts slightly up, remains near $96 a barrel

BANGKOK (AP) ? The price of oil rose slightly Monday, extending gains posted late last week on the heels of a positive U.S. employment report.

Benchmark oil for July delivery rose 5 cents to $96.08 per barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract for benchmark crude rose $1.27 to close at $96.03 a barrel on the Nymex on Friday.

Oil markets were being carried by a small swell of optimism triggered by better-than-expected jobs numbers out of the U.S. on Friday. The U.S. economy added 175,000 jobs in May ? a steady pace that shows strength in the face of tax increases and government spending cuts.

"After a sharp rebound from last Friday, they continuously extended the gains," Ken Hasagawa, energy analyst at Newedge brokerage in Tokyo, said Monday of oil prices.

Gains in energy prices were reflective of the latest upswing in stock markets. The Standard & Poor's 500 index and the Dow Jones industrial average both rose more than 1 percent on Friday. Japan's Nikkei 225 clocked a 3.8 percent gain in Tokyo on Monday.

Brent crude, a benchmark for many international oil varieties, rose 7 cents to $104.63 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 1.3 cents to $2.8842 a gallon.

? Heating oil gained 0.6 cents to $2.8995 per gallon.

? Natural gas fell 1 cent at $3.818 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Colorado secede? Counties weigh exit plan to form state of 'North Colorado'

Colorado secede? It sounds implausible, but the idea of counties withdrawing from one state to form a new one isn?t impossible. But some big hurdles?? like the US Constitution?? make it very difficult.

Colorado state flag. Some rural counties in the state want to secede, forming a new state of 'North Colorado.'

It?s an uphill climb that looks Rocky Mountain high, but a collection of independent-thinking counties may mount an effort to secede from the rest of Colorado and form their own new state.

The idea is rooted in the political rift that many Coloradans ? especially rural ones ? feel with a Denver-based state legislature that has taken a liberal turn in recent years.

A new state, if it formed, might be called North Colorado.

Would that mean that the rest of the current state would need to become South Colorado? How would the US flag look with 51 stars? Would this give similar ideas to politically restive sections of other states?

It may be too early to ask such questions. The road to forming a new state is a difficult one.

The move would require not just a secession vote showing the counties? desire to depart. It would also require votes of approval by Colorado?s Legislature and by the US Congress, according to Article 4 of the US Constitution.

?No new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress,? the Constitution says.

According to the National Constitution Center, an organization based in Philadelphia, this process ?has been used successfully to create five states: Vermont (from New York, in 1791); Kentucky (from Virginia, in 1792); Tennessee (from North Carolina, in 1796); Maine (from Massachusetts, in 1820); and West Virginia (from Virginia, in 1863).?

So it can be done. And in Colorado, the idea is on the table.

In a Thursday?news article, the Coloradan website said the state?s Democrat-controlled Legislature has recently passed laws for stricter gun control, greater reliance on renewable energy in rural areas, and restraints on what was perceived as cruel treatment of livestock.

?Our vision and our morals are no longer represented by the state [Legislature] and the current [governor?s] administration, and we think it?s time that we do take seriously what our options are,? said Douglas Rademacher, a Weld County Commissioner. ?This is just one of our options, but we will be moving forward with it.?

In addition to Weld County, other counties weighing the new-state idea are Morgan, Logan, Sedgwick, Phillips, Washington, Yuma, and Kit Carson.

A state of North Colorado containing those counties would not be the smallest US state, in land area, but it would have the smallest population.

Similar ideas have?sprung up?in other US states. But again, since 1863, secession to form a new state hasn?t actually happened.

Fort Hood suspect's paralysis could slow trial

(AP) ? The paralysis-related health problems of the Army psychologist charged with carrying out the deadly attack on Fort Hood could significantly slow the pace of his upcoming court-martial, including delays for stretch breaks and fewer daily hours for testimony.

Maj. Nidal Hasan was left paralyzed from the abdomen down when police shot him during the Nov. 5, 2009, attack on the Texas Army post that left 13 people dead and nearly three dozen wounded. If convicted, he faces execution or life in prison.

Jury selection was to begin last week, with testimony set to start in early July. But everything was pushed back again last week, at least briefly, during a hearing in which the Army judge, Col. Tara Osborn, granted Hasan's request to represent himself. Before she did, she warned him that doing so would be "a far more physically taxing enterprise than you can imagine."

She's expected to rule Tuesday on his request for a three-month delay.

While Hasan can maneuver his wheelchair, his doctor said Hasan cannot sit upright more than 12 hours a day without his concentration being affected. Inmates at Hasan's jail must wake up before dawn, so daily testimony would have to conclude by 5 p.m. at the latest, Dr. Prasad Lakshminarasimhiah told the judge last week.

A court-martial already has the potential to take longer because military jurors are allowed to submit questions to witnesses after they have testified, so many judges allow testimony to continue until late at night, if witnesses and the jury want to keep going. But that would not be possible at Hasan's trial.

To avoid muscle spasms, Hasan also must have 15- to 20-minute breaks for stretching every four hours. To avoid developing sores, he also must relieve pressure by lifting himself off his wheelchair for about a minute every half hour.

It's unclear if the breaks for stretching and meals could be taken at the same time, and Fort Hood officials have not said if the trial's daily schedule will be set with Hasan's medical issues in mind.

Hasan, who uses a catheter and adult diapers, refuses to take medication that would help regulate his digestive system, and he must eat at the same time each day to avoid accidents, Lakshminarasimhiah said. The jail serves breakfast at about 4:30 a.m., lunch about 10:30 a.m. and dinner at about 4:30 p.m., but the American-born Muslim told the judge that he fasts frequently and misses a meal on those days.

Hasan is housed in the nearby Bell County Jail, which has a contract with Fort Hood to hold all of its defendants because the Army post does not have holding facilities.

Hasan has lost weight since his arrest; his face is gaunter than his Army photo taken before the rampage. It's unclear if the weight loss is due to his fasting or a health problem.

In September, Hasan was hospitalized a few days for undisclosed reasons. His former defense attorney, John Galligan, said he believes Hasan was hospitalized because of problems related to his incontinence. Hasan had health problems stemming from his catheter, including blood in his urine, about a year before he was hospitalized, Galligan said.

Because he has "poor trunk support," Hasan has difficulty writing more than a few pages at a time, and nerve damage in his left hand makes typing more challenging, his doctor told the judge.

When Osborn asked how he would write legal motions, a necessity for an attorney during a trial, Hasan answered, "I'll do the best I can."

Medical experts not involved in Hasan's case say a paraplegic may be able to do the same tasks as others, but first must develop the strength and stamina over time.

"If he has not been doing (these things), sitting up for 12 hours may be stretching it," said Dr. Rita Hamilton, director of spinal cord injury medicine for the Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation in Dallas.

In addition to ruling on Hasan's request for a three-month trial delay on Tuesday, the judge is expected to discuss his "defense of others" strategy, which requires him to prove the shootings were necessary to protect others from imminent harm or death. Hasan told the judge that U.S. troops deploying from the Army post posed an immediate threat to Taliban leaders in Afghanistan.

Witnesses said the day of the rampage a gunman wearing an Army combat uniform shouted "Allahu Akbar!" ? "God is great!" in Arabic ? and opened fire in a crowded medical building where deploying soldiers get vaccines and tests. Witnesses said the gunman fired rapidly, pausing only to reload, even shooting at some soldiers as they hid under desks and fled the building.

Government documents show that in the years before the shooting, Hasan told some colleagues that the U.S. was at war with Islam. In some emails to a radical Muslim cleric, Hasan indicated that he supported terrorists and was intrigued with the idea of U.S. soldiers killing comrades in the name of Islam.
