8 Unfortunate Vintage Candy Wrappers

According to a recent article on Smithsonian.com, the notion that poison candy is routinely distributed to unsuspecting children on Halloween is a myth perpetrated by advice columnists Dear Abby and Ann Landers in the 1980s and ’90s. But historically, candy meant for young consumers has sported poisonous-sounding, WTF wrappers and packages that most self-respecting 2013 parents would be dismayed to see dumped out of their children’s trick-or-treat bags. Behind the Blue Veil: Film Review

The Bottom Line

This powerful if scattershot documentary sheds valuable light on its little-known subject.

The Tuareg people of Mali don’t have it easy these days. These nomadic tribesmen, who have lived in the Sahara region for over 2,000 years, are currently beset by such crises as severe poverty, a lack of food, water and medicine, and political pressures that threaten to drive them from existence. Their travails are movingly conveyed in Robyn Simon’s (Transformation: The Life & Legacy of Werner Erhard) documentary Behind the Blue Veil, the title of which stems from the trademark blue robes worn by the people dye their skin blue over time.

The film’s central figure is Mamatel, the son of a Tuareg chief who works as a music promoter in the capital city of Bamako. This charismatic, articulate figure serves as the viewer’s guide to the culture of the “blue people of the Sahara,” who are fighting for independence from the repressive government even as Al Qaeda militants threaten to overcome the region.

Commentary by Mamatel and various scholars and academics testify to the fact that that the Tuareg are a matriarchal, monogamous society with a rich cultural heritage that is seemingly on the verge of extinction. Among the other figures profiled in the film is twelve-year-old Salah, who seeks an education in Timbuktu, a city facing severe economic pressures due to its dangerously volatile conditions that has made it off limits to tourists.

The film is more impressionistic than informative, lacking the necessary dramatic structure to make it truly compelling. But it well succeeds in its goal of shedding light on these little-known indigenous people, even if at times it more resembles a National Geographic pictorial essay than a fully realized documentary.

Cristiano Ronaldo Launches CR7 Underwear Line

Showing some love to his adoring fans, Cristiano Ronaldo showed up at the kickoff of his CR7 by Cristiano Ronaldo underwear line in Madrid, Spain today (October 31).

Unfortunately for the crowd, the Real Madrid stud wore more than just his signature briefs as he hammed it up at Palacio de Cibeles.

The CR7 goodies will go on sale on November 1st, however there was a bit of a snag in the promotional campaign for the boys range.

In an attempt to get fans involved, CR7 issued a contest, inviting consumers to “upload your best, craziest and funniest fan image showing your love for CR7 and win a trip to meet Cristiano Ronaldo and seen him play a match! The first prize covers three lucky people, so bring a grown-up and your best friend.”

After the close of the competition, Ronaldo tweeted, “Thank you all for participating in the CR7 Boys Underwear Competition- it’s been a real pleasure to see all of your photos.”

Upon closer examination, Ronaldo’s people realized the creepy factor and deleted the post.

Obama gets more tech help to fix healthcare site

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Obama administration has recruited engineers from several prominent technology companies to help fix the problems preventing people from signing up for government-mandated health insurance.

Oracle and Red Hat are pitching in as well as Michael Dickerson, an engineer on leave from Google, according to a blog post Thursday by Julie Bataille, a spokeswoman for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Oracle Corp. CEO Larry Ellison told shareholders at the software maker's annual meeting Thursday that the Redwood Shores, Calif., company is trying to make the Healthcare.gov website more reliable and secure.

"Most of us want to see our government operating efficiently and effectively and it is incumbent upon us to help them do that," Ellison said.

Red Hat Inc. and Google Inc. declined to comment.

Dickerson is a site-reliability engineer at Google. He is now working directly with QSSI, the general contractor hired to upgrade Healthcare.gov, Bataille said.

Exasperation with the website's buggy technology has been compounded by concerns that the service lacks the security measures needed to protect the sensitive information of people looking for insurance.

Besides Dickerson, the government also identified entrepreneur Greg Gershman as one of its new troubleshooters. Gershman currently is director of innovation at mobile app developer Mobomo, according to his profile on professional networking site LinkedIn.

Gershman's resume says he received a Presidential Innovation Fellowship last year to work with the White House on a project seeking "to re-imagine the relationship between citizens and government around the citizen's needs."

The Obama administration has pledged Healthcare.gov will be running smoothly by Nov. 30.

Kendra Wilkinson Confirms Second Pregnancy: "Round Two! Here We Go!"

It's official! Kendra Wilkinson has confirmed that she and her husband Hank Baskett are expecting their second child together. The former Playboy model announced the baby news via Twitter on Thursday, Oct. 31.

PHOTOS: Kendra's first pregnancy

"Round two. Here we go!!" the 28-year-old wrote to her over 2 million followers. Alongside the caption, the blonde beauty shared a picture of herself makeup-free holding up her pregnancy test marked "pregnant," with a big smile on her face.

Wilkinson also confirmed the news during a TODAY show appearance with Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb the same day. "Kendra on Top, naughty, naughty, that's what got me pregnant with baby number two," she teased. "We planned this to be right after the season, so I'll have time to puke. You know, be in a cave." She added: "I'm really at a great stage. Not physically. I'm in the bathroom every 10 minutes," she said of her morning sickness.

Us Weekly exclusively broke news earlier this month that the reality star and 31-year-old former NFL player -- married since June 2009 — were expecting again. "She and Hank have been planning a second baby for a while," an insider revealed to Us, "and they are very excited."

Wilkinson previously told Us in August they were ready to also give their son Hank Baskett IV, almost 4, a younger sibling. "We are trying, we are going to start now," she said at the Hollywood premiere of Disney's Planes on Aug. 5. "This is my first official announcement! We are very excited about making the decision to try!"

>> DRIVING THE DAY: NSA infiltrates links to Yahoo, Google data centers worldwide, Snowden documents say, by Barton Gellman, Ashkan Soltani: "The National Security Agency has secretly broken into the main communications links that connect Yahoo and Google data centers around the world... By tapping those links, the agency has positioned itself to collect at will from hundreds of millions of user accounts, many of them belonging to Americans. The NSA does not keep everything it collects, but it keeps a lot... The NSA's principal tool to exploit the data links is a project called MUSCULAR, operated jointly with the agency's British counterpart, GCHQ... From undisclosed interception points, the NSA and the GCHQ are copying entire data flows across fiber-optic cables that carry information among the data centers of the Silicon Valley giants." WaPo

>> STAT DU JOUR: Sony slips into loss despite pick up in smartphone sales, by John Ribeiro: "Losses widened in the quarter to ¥19.3 billion (US$196 million) from ¥15.5 billion in the same quarter last year. Revenue for the quarter was close to ¥1.8 trillion, a 10.6 percent increase over the same quarter last year. Revenue, however, decreased 9 percent in constant currency, reflecting the volatility of the Yen. Sony reported in the last quarter a modest profit of ¥3.5 billion which it attributed to improved sales of smartphones and the favorable impact of foreign exchange rates, continuing a turnaround that started in the last fiscal year, when it posted its first profit in many years... also revised downwards its revenue and net profit outlook for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014, after revising its annual sales forecasts for certain product lines." >> PREMATURELY GRAY: Facebook beats on revenues and EPS but teen users show decline, by Jim Edwards: "It's a big beat on both revenues and EPS, and the stock popped up 15% immediately in after hours trading.... But then it gave up most of those gains when CFO David Ebersman said the company had seen a small reduction in use by teens.... But no one at Facebook has ever admitted before that it may be losing teens. Ebersman said the stats were not significant: 'We did see a decrease in daily users partly among younger teens. ... This is of questionable significance.'... The reason: Investors bet on the future, not what just happened. 'When you study finance, you are studying how to make things happen, on a big scale, on a lasting scale,' Shiller said. 'That has to matter more than getting into Google and programming some little gimmick.' The way Shiller sees it, finance underscores every worthwhile pursuit. The proposed legislation could be signed into law as early as the end of this week... By moving DNS resolution out of Brazil and back to the United States, Google DNS now operates outside of Brazilian jurisdiction. The former, Walt Mossberg, defined what it means to be a mainstream gadget reviewer when he started a weekly column, Personal Technology, for the Wall Street Journal, in 1991. The latter, David Pogue, began his column for the New York Times, State of the Art, in 2000. Every week, like a modern-day Prometheus handing down secret knowledge about arcane tools, they have dutifully informed millions of readers about the latest gadgets or services, and whether or not they are worth purchasing. Woody Allen Pens Rare Open Letter to Hollywood (Guest Column)

Courtesy Everett Collection

From left: Wiest, Mia Farrow, Barbara Hershey and Allen on the set of 1986's "Hannah and Her Sisters."

This story first appeared in the Nov. 8 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

Tom Donahue's documentary Casting By, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2012, uses the careers of casting directors such as Marion Dougherty, Lynn Stalmaster and Juliet Taylor -- between them responsible for the ensembles of such films as Midnight Cowboy, Manhattan, Bonnie and Clyde and The Graduate -- to lament that casting is the only "single-card" opening credit that isn't recognized by the Academy Awards. With Casting By opening in New York on Nov. 1 and a week later in Los Angeles, Woody Allen wrote to THR to support the recognition of casting directors by championing his own:

PHOTOS: 'Blue Jasmine' Premiere: Cate Blanchett, Peter Sarsgaard Hit the Red Carpet in L.A.

In my case certainly, the casting director plays a vital part in the making of the movie. My history shows that my films are full of wonderful performances by actors and actresses I had never heard of and were not only introduced to me by my casting director, Juliet Taylor, but, in any number of cases, pushed on me against my own resistance. People like Jeff Daniels, Mary Beth Hurt, Patricia Clarkson and others who are people I was unfamiliar with. A number of discoveries and careers have been launched by the energies and resourcefulness of my casting director. Not only did I use Meryl Streep for a small part in Manhattan when she was a relative unknown, but at the best my casting director helped start the film career of Mariel Hemingway and Dianne Wiest, a stage actress completely unknown to me but known by Juliet Taylor. I’m particularly difficult in the casting area because the whole process bores and embarrasses me. If it were up to me we would use the same half dozen people in all my pictures, whether they fit or not. Despite my recalcitrance, Juliet has forced me to meet and to watch the work of many new people and to hire people on nothing more then her strong recommendation. Because my films are not special effects films and are about human beings, proper casting is absolutely essential. I owe a big part of the success of my films to this scrupulous casting process which I must say if left to my own devices would never have happened. I might add also, anecdotally, that despite my firm conviction that I could never persuade luminaries like Saul Bellow, Marshall McLuhan, Susan Sontag, Mayor Koch and others to work in my films, the confidence and insistence of my casting director proved more accurate and I wound up getting these unlikely notables.

Sincerely,
Woody Allen
