From All Africa?..
As the Month long GrassRoot Cardiovascular Health, GRCH, programme of the Chike Okoli Foundation ended last week, experts have raised alarm over increasing incidences of childhood obesity in the country, blaming it on inactivity among the Nigerian children.
They little or nothing is being done to check the trend.
A medical expert from the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Dr. Oluchi Okafor who spoke during the school health programme organised by Chike Okoli Foundation in one of the 10 selected schools under the GRCH project, Mainland Senior High School Fadeyi, noted the role of parents to seriously stem down the surge.
Lamenting the long hours that children spend on social media, Okafor who is also a Public Health Physician stressed the need for parents to structure regular exercise into the time of the children. ?Parents should not allow their children to always have their way. Parents should begin to stop this trend.?
She further posited that regular health check was key to assessing cardiovascular risk of an individual even as she added that healthy life style would prevent cardiovascular diseases.
In her lecture entitled; ?Cardiovascular Disease: Your Health and You?, Okafor who spoke extensively on the need for a healthy lifestyle explained the ABCs of healthy living saying; ?There is need for people to keep their weight down, know their blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, eat less salt, but more vegetables and fruits, exercise regularly and stop smoking.
Corroborating her views, Project Coordinator of Chike Okoli Foundation, Ms. Beauty Alfred, explained that GRCH was an enlightenment programme that teaches a healthier lifestyle and ways to ensure a health heart and an active life.
